Fastening the future

How Hobson Engineering is raising the bar for steel supply chain quality

For almost 90 years, Hobson Engineering has been synonymous with reliability, quality, and technical expertise in fastening solutions. What started in 1935 as a small Sydney engineering workshop producing bicycle axles and roller skates has grown into Australia’s leading wholesale supplier of fasteners, serving the construction, mining, oil, manufacturing, and importantly, the steel—industries.

From structural bolts and high-tensile assemblies to allthread rod and specialty anchors, Hobson’s extensive product range and commitment to quality have earned it a reputation as a trusted partner for some of the country’s most critical infrastructure and industrial projects.

“We’re specialists in threaded fasteners,” said Alex Sharp, Senior Engineer at Hobson. “Allthread rod remains a key component of our offering, alongside stainless steel fasteners, socket head cap screws, self-drilling screws, concrete anchors, and lifting and material handling components. While fasteners are our specialty, our capabilities go far beyond.”

Engineering a legacy

Hobson’s story is grounded in family values, long-term vision, and a culture of innovation. The company’s founder, Ron Hobson, famously became Australian roller skating champion using skates he engineered himself. By the 1940s, Hobson had pivoted to meet wartime demand, manufacturing allthread and studs for critical applications.

The next major turning point came in the 1990s, when Peter Hobson—Ron’s son—took the reins. At a time when Australian manufacturing was shifting away from local production towards global supply chains, Peter modernised Hobson’s operations, expanding the product range and embracing international sourcing while maintaining the company’s engineering DNA.

“That shift was strategic,” explained Sharp. “By staying as ‘Hobson Engineering’ rather than becoming just another fastener distributor, we retained our technical depth and broader product capabilities. That’s been key to our growth and to supporting industries like steel fabrication and construction.”

Today, Hobson has warehouses in almost every state and a presence in every major industrial hub. The business remains family-owned and committed to pushing industry standards forward.

Pioneering solutions for weathering steel

One of Hobson’s most impactful recent innovations is its weathering steel fastener range, developed in close collaboration with BlueScope.

“BlueScope began producing structural grades of weathering steel, which has excellent corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance requirements,” said Sharp. “It’s ideal for infrastructure projects where long-term durability is essential, like bridges in remote locations.”

However, there was a problem: there were no Australian-compliant fasteners suitable for these new steels.

“We worked closely with BlueScope to develop a complementary fastener range that met Australian Standards and the material’s unique properties,” Sharp explained.

That partnership helped bring to life projects like the Fitzroy River Bridge replacement in Western Australia, a structure built to withstand environmental extremes. “It’s been a real success story,” said Sharp. “We’re now replicating this model in other applications across the country.”

Compliance beyond the minimum

In an era of increasing imports and price-driven procurement, Hobson stands out for its rigorous approach to quality assurance.

“The first thing to remember is that compliance is the minimum expectation,” Sharp stressed. “When you say something complies with a Standard, it has to be more than just a tick-box exercise. It has to align with the intent of the regulation.”

Hobson maintains a NATA-accredited testing laboratory for the tensile testing of fasteners and is certified to ISO 9001. But they go further than many in the industry. Hobson pioneered the use of three-letter trace for structural bolts and other high risk products such as lifting hooks, allowing full traceability, even a decade after installation.

“If there’s ever a question, we can pull up all the test documentation based on the three-letter trace code,” Sharp explained. “It’s not a requirement, but it’s part of what we do because we take ownership of what we supply. That’s what ‘when quality matters’ actually means to us.”

Driving change with smarter fastening

Hobson’s success also stems from its commitment to pushing better technologies into the Australian market—even when that means challenging the status quo.

“In a high labour cost market like Australia, anything that makes jobs faster, easier and more reliable is worth adopting,” Sharp noted. “We pioneered the use of tension control bolts in Australia, which dramatically reduce the time needed to erect structures.”

As part of this push, Hobson actively engages with industry bodies like the Australian Engineered Fasteners and Anchors Council (AEFAC), the Australian Steel Institute (ASI), and the Concrete Institute of Australia to understand emerging needs and to educate the market on safer, more efficient solutions.

Supporting a changing industry

As the steel sector evolves, shaped by renewables, infrastructure investment, and European-influenced design, Hobson is adapting its product strategy to match.

“Take wind turbines, for example,” Sharp said. “The designs are coming from Europe, and the fasteners need to meet European specifications. That’s a challenge if local teams aren’t familiar with the systems.”

This is where Hobson’s deep technical expertise becomes a competitive advantage. “Fastening is a niche. Structural engineers understand the design of a connection, but not necessarily how that connection performs in practice. That’s where we come in, providing the right products and the right advice.”

Quality that holds it all together

In an industry built on strength, Hobson Engineering has become a cornerstone. For steel fabricators, builders, engineers and asset owners, the company offers more than just fasteners. Hobson provides trust, technical leadership, and a clear understanding of what’s at stake when things go wrong.

“Fasteners are critical. If they fail, it’s a disaster. It costs time, money, and safety,” said Sharp. “That’s why we take quality seriously, and why we’ve built systems that back up every claim we make.”

In a market increasingly shaped by offshore procurement, compliance risks, and rapid project cycles, Hobson Engineering is proving that integrity, innovation and deep expertise are still the strongest bonds of all.
