60 years of COLORBOND® steel

Sixty years of prepainted steel

Reflecting on the role of COLORBOND® steel in Australian construction

In 2026, the Australian steel industry marks sixty years since the introduction of COLORBOND® steel, a milestone that reflects the evolution of locally manufactured prepainted steel products and their role in shaping Australia’s built environment.

First produced in Australia in the mid-1960s, prepainted steel represented a significant development in construction materials, combining the strength of steel with factory applied coatings designed for durability and appearance. Over time BlueScope’s COLORBOND® steel products have become widely used across residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications, supporting a broad range of building needs in Australian conditions.

Innovation and collaboration across the supply chain

The development and ongoing use of prepainted steel products has been underpinned by collaboration across the steel value chain, from steelmaking and coating through to rollforming, fabrication, design and installation. This collaboration has enabled COLORBOND® steel to evolve in response to changing performance requirements, building standards and design expectations.

Advancements in coating systems and colour technologies over recent decades have aimed to improve corrosion resistance, thermal performance and aesthetic flexibility, helping designers and builders respond to Australia’s diverse climates and project types. These developments reflect broader trends across the steel industry toward continuous improvement and innovation.

Contribution to Australia’s built environment

Prepainted steel features across a wide range of Australian buildings, from housing and commercial facilities to transport, education and community infrastructure. COLORBOND® steel’s adaptability has supported both largescale projects and smaller, specialised applications, contributing to consistency and reliability in construction outcomes. For manufacturers, distributors and fabricators, the long-term presence of COLORBOND® steel has provided continuity within the local market, supporting skills development and longstanding industry relationships.

Manufacturing capability and future pathways

Australian steelmaking and downstream manufacturing remain important contributors to the national economy and regional communities. Facilities such as BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks and Western Port plants continue to play a role in supplying steel coil for coated products used across the country.

At the same time, the steel industry is actively exploring pathways to reduce emissions and improve resource efficiency. Investment in new technologies and process  improvements reflects a broader industry commitment to contribute to more sustainable outcomes in the built environment.

Marking an industry milestone

The sixty-year history of COLORBOND® steel offers an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of prepainted steel to Australian construction, and on the collective effort of those across the supply chain who continue to support its use and development.

For Australia’s steel sector, including manufacturers, rollformers, fabricators and distributors, this milestone highlights the value of local capability, collaboration and ongoing innovation in meeting the needs of a changing built environment.
